Description
The Beacon Sloop Club is 41 years old. it was started by the Folk Singer, Pete Seeger, as an environmental organization dedicated to improving, protecting, and preserving the the Hudson River environment. One of the First things it did was to transform a former city dump into Riverside Park. The impetus to build the River pool also becan with the club. The second major project was the building of a reproduction wooden slop, the Woody Guthrie. The Woody has been providing people with free evening sails during the summer month. The club also offers a sailing course in the spring.The Club also puts of 3 festivals, (strawberry, corn, and pumpkin) that are free to the public. In the Winter the club holds a series of lectures about the Hudson River Valle which are also free to the public. Meetings are the first Friday of every month, and start with a pot luck supper, general meeting followed by a circle of song. Musicians and people are welcome to come.
