Saturday, October 25th 1-4 pm Altar-Making Workshop Location: Mid Hudson Heritage Center, 317 Main St. Workshop leader: Estela & Margarita Larios Description: Learn the customs and symbolism of the Day of the Dead altars, while creating a community altar together with others. Bring any favorite flowers, food, and photos of your own lost relatives to honor in the altar. Registration info: 15 people, all ages. Monday, October 27th – Sunday, November 2nd – Community Altar Contest Location: see map Description: Local businesses will display their own altars. Use the map to visit each altar in Middle Main (while sampling the local food) and vote on your favorite. Winners will be announced at the Grand Celebration on Sunday November 2nd. Ballot drop-off: Art Centro, Mid Hudson Heritage Center Monday, October 27th 5:30-8:30 pm - Pan de Muerto Workshop Location: El Patron Cuisine, 411 Main St. Workshop leader: Miguel Angel de Mendoza Description: Learn how to bake the traditional Day of the Dead bread, using authentic ingredients imported from Mexico. Each participant will make their own loaf to bring home. Registration info: 10 people, ages 10+. Tuesday, October 28th 6-8 pm – Papel Picado Workshop Location: Mainstay Co-working? Workshop leader: Salvador Moreno Description: Learn how to make vibrant, decorative banners out of perforated paper. Participants will bring home their own banners to decorate for Dia de los Muertos. Registration info: 16 people, all ages. Wednesday, October 29th 5:30-7:30 pm Community Meet-Up Location: Mid Hudson Heritage Center, 317 Main St. HRH Staff: Lindsay Duvall, Geoff Bliss, Emma Flynn Description: An open, community meeting about neighborhood issues. Meet your neighbors, enjoy refreshments from a local business, and view the Dia de los Muertos art exhibition and altars. Saturday, November 1st 1-3 pm Ceramic Skull Painting Workshop Location: Art Centro, 485 Main St. Workshop leader: Alexis Feldheim Description: Decorate a ceramic skull with brilliant colors of glaze. All pieces will be fired in a kiln and ready for pick-up the following week. Registration info: 32 people, all ages. 1 workshop from 1-2pm (16), 1 workshop from 2-3pm (16) Sunday, Nov. 2nd 3-7 pm - Grand Celebration Location: Mid Hudson Heritage Center, 317 Main St. Description: • Altars on display • Art exhibition • Face painting • Sugar skull decorating • Raffle • Local food donations • Community altar competition winners announced • Youth arts contest • Mariachi music performance • Grupo Folklorico de Poughkeepsie dance performance • Pre-Columbian dance performance (TENTATIVE)
