Broadening its commitment to brightening the lives of older adults and building community connections, Vassar-Warner Home, located at 52 S. Hamilton St. in the City of Poughkeepsie, announced a call for volunteers. Individuals and families of all ages, as well as businesses, are invited to donate their time, whether it be an hour a week, monthly visits or as their schedule allows.

“At Vassar-Warner Home, making a difference has been ingrained in our mission since our founding in 1835,” said Ericka Von Salews, executive director of Vassar-Warner Home. “Now more than ever, volunteering is vital. By showcasing talents, dedicating time and sharing kindness with one of the most vulnerable communities in the region – seniors – Hudson Valley residents have the chance to help those dealing with loneliness and isolation feel valued.”

Volunteers have the opportunity to participate in, or host, the following activities:

  • Visit, read, play games, socialize, take walks or enjoy coffee with residents.
  • Teach technology: phones, tablets and family video calls.
  • Share musical, artistic, educational or creative talents by hosting events.
  • Set and reset tables, as well as prepare dining rooms for special events.
  • Help set up parties, socials, outings and open houses.
  • Welcome current or new residents and their families, as well as prepare welcome packets and activity materials for events.
  • Support fundraising, outreach and community visits.
  • Assist with building, painting and grounds projects like watering plants, gardening and outdoor maintenance.
  • Organize supplies, donations, storage and the Vassar-Warner Home library or make creative bulletin boards, cards and newsletter packets.

About Vassar-Warner Home:
Since 1871, Vassar-Warner Home, listed on the National Register of Historic Places, has served as Dutchess County’s sole nonprofit senior living residence. In 2026, Vassar-Warner Home fully reopened as an independent senior living facility, placing dignity, community, independence and compassion for all at the heart of its mission. The Home’s all-inclusive rate covers three daily meals, laundry, housekeeping and social, cultural and physical activities.
